With the recession finally hitting home, local business need your support more than ever and we are no exception. 

When we started The Haslemere Pet Company nearly four years ago, we inherited quite a lot of garden products left over from the former Pets and Gardens business.  It didn’t take us too long to realize that the reason there was so much of it, was because no one was buying.  Even 50% off sales heavily advertised in the local media failed to shift the products, and so we decided to donate them to local garden clubs/schools and say goodbye to the Garden Department.  The day of the small high street garden shop was indeed over.

Now with the re-emphasis back on shopping locally, we have been seeing customers that have not come to the shop in years. Although many are looking for pet supplies, a fair number have been asking for loose grass seed, seed potatoes and all manor of fertilizers which this shop has not sold in any quantity since the opening of the large garden centres. 

Quite a few customers have expressed disappointment that the “little garden shop on the corner” is no longer there, and while we hate to disappoint anyone, it’s too late in the day for us to switch back to stocking the wide range of Garden Supplies that the shop traditionally held.  Space is one issue, and staff training is another.  But this situation serves as a real reminder that if you don’t use your local shops, you will loose them.

So now, when everyone is starting to feel the economic pinch, we are asking you to support your local high street traders now more than ever.
