So What's The Big Deal About Catnip?

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a herb belonging to the mint family and is native to Europe. The plant can grow as high as 3 feet, and can be recognised by its clusters of small white purple-spotted flowers at the ends of its stems.

How does catnip work?

Catnip contains various aromatic oils including one called nepetalactone - a mild hallucinogen which is the main cause of the Cat’s reaction. The receptor for nepetalactone is in the vomeronasal organ (also known as Jacobson's organ) at the back of the cat's nose and catnip needs to be inhaled to cause its effect.

When exposed to catnip some cats will rub, sniff, lick or even eat the plant - sometimes they may start rolling around. Behavioural changes are often seen which may include making loud noises, staggering around, playing wildly, or acting like a “fool”.  The effects usually last for a few minutes, and Cats will not normally react to catnip for at least an hour.  Cats do not react to Catnip until they are at least 2 months old.

Does Catnip have any practical uses?

Besides “entertaining” your Cat, Catnip can be used to encourage your cat to use a scratching post, or used as a reward if you are thinking about positive training methods.

Does Catnip have any adverse side effects?

Some cats may react badly to Catnip.  Just as some humans get aggressive when they drink too much, some Cats may also suffer this side effect.  The effects only last a few minutes, but if your Cat does get aggressive with Catnip, it would be best to avoid toys which contain the herb.

Very few Cats have an allergic reaction, or get ill from using Catnip.  Catnip is also not addictive.

Where can I find Catnip?

You can find Catnip in a variety of places, but the safest and cleanest way to purchase Catnip is at a Pet Shop.  Catnip is sold in powder or spray form, and some toys already contain Catnip.  You can also buy Catnip seeds in garden centres so that you can grow your own, but take care as Catnip plants can easily spread and take over your garden!

Avoid picking Catnip plants which you have not grown yourself as any harmful chemicals will be transferred to your cat.
